Highway variable message signs
Data Display manufactures a wide range of highway variable message signs (VMS) suitable for a whole host of traffic management applications. Both the size and the type of the display can be configured for the particular application in terms of the size of the road, the viewing distances required and the type of messages to be displayed.
All highway displays feature robust, all-weather IP65 housings and are designed to withstand vibration. Integral light sensors control the brightness of the image to ensure clear, non-dazzling messages will retain optimum visibility in all operating conditions, even direct sunlight and adverse weather conditions. Our signs are also designed to conform to the company's UK Highways Agency's TR2136 Approval, where required.
Highway signs can also be fitted with a speed detection device allowing a message to be displayed when a speed threshold is exceeded. A recent project involved fitting the display with a speed-activated sensor to warn traffic to slow down on-coming traffic on the approach to a roundabout on a fast dual carriageway.
This project featured a bi-colour full matrix display allowing text and or/graphic images to be displayed using 3,000mcd Ultrabright LEDs
These full matrix VMS displays have recently been installed on the Amsterdam ring road and allow up to 3 lines of text and symbols to be displayed using 3 LEDs per pixel
Trailer mounted displays
Such displays are extremely versatile as they can be easily and quickly deployed at short notice to get information to drivers when and where they need it. The unit is easily transportable and can be used time and time again. This offers the flexibility to warn drivers in advance of temporary events which are likely to impact on traffic such as diversions, accidents, expected congestion, road closures, road-works or contra-flows.
These displays also prove to be invaluable in the effective regulation of traffic during an event, where traffic can become highly congested. This may include effective route signage to direct people to the event or creating diversionary or alternative routes to successfully manage traffic congestion or simply just informing motorists of potential delays or to have tickets ready on arrival.
The display is mounted on a central hydraulic-powered pillar for raising and lowering and is capable of displaying both text and pictograms. Our signs are extremely reliable and user friendly and have a range of remote programming options, thus reducing the need for on-site supervision.
Displays may be powered by battery, solar power or mains supply and built-in sensors control the display’s brightness levels to ensure clear, non-dazzling messages. Furthermore, the sign can be fitted with a speed-activated detector which activates the display to flash warning messages to alert the driver.

Interactive traffic signs
Our range of vehicle activated signs are designed to interact with drivers and immediately influence their behaviour. When presented with real time information, they are encouraged to make more informed decisions about their current driving behaviour such as approaching hazards at safe speeds and adhering to speed limits.
Data Display provides a comprehensive range of speed reactive signs which have proved invaluable for critical areas such as around schools, residential areas and hospitals where pedestrian crossings may not be sufficient to reduce accident rates. They are also a proven means of alerting drivers to sudden changes in speed limit changes and of dangerous bends.
Signs have an adjustable speed setting, which can be adapted to suit local regulatory and operating requirements and are capable of displaying both text and pictograms. Equipped with an automatic brightness control, our LED displays will remain visible in all operating conditions, even direct sunlight. Units do not require routine maintenance and are powered by mains supply as standard but, solar and wind powered options are also available.
